Headbands are back in Fashion

Headbands-are-back-in-Fashion

What is a headband? A headband is an accessory worn in the hair or around the forehead, usually to hold hair away from the face or eyes. Headbands generally consist of a loop of elastic material or a horseshoe-shaped piece of flexible plastic or metal. They come in assorted shapes and sizes and are used for both practical and fashion purposes. There are headbands for men and headbands for women. Some are for fashion and some are functional like the ones tennis players wear to keep the sweat out of their eyes or the king Rambo uses to repel grenades or to stop blood flow and other cool stuff.

There are also the horseshoe-shaped headbands are sometimes called Alice bands after the headbands that Alice of the Alice in Wonderland is often shown wearing. These are a bit of a departure from the Rambo/Federer style and probably are not good at keeping the sweat out of your eyes. Alice in Wonderland probably doesn’t sweat. Her headband is more designed to keep her hair out of her eyes.

Headbands have a long history. The ancient Greeks wore hair wreaths. The Greeks and Romans wore these pieces to very special occasions or an important event. Cultures such as the Etruscans and Romans started to decorate their wreaths with jewels made up of gold and silver. While wreaths are certainly a likely beginning of today’s headbands, some believe that current day hair bands have slowly taken shape from scarves that were worn around the head or were modified from the band of hats that tied under the chin.

Over time the wearing of headbands has changed from being worn to special occasions and important events to more of a fashionable accessory. There are many kinds of headbands such as, leathered, plastic, metal, fabric, toothed and novelty. The leather headbands are usually glued onto a harder plastic headband, or they are hand-stitched. Plastic headbands, which are most common, can be wavy, straight or angled and come in many colors. Metal can also be used to form and support leather headbands. Metal-only headbands may be plain or decorated, sometimes with precious jewels. Fabric headbands are comfortable because they do not dig into the head. They usually have an elastic band, so that the headband conforms to the shape of the head. The toothed headbands have comb-like teeth that are connected to the top part of the headband. Their teeth ensure that the hair stays in place. Novelty headbands can be used for holidays and may have decorations attached such as bunny ears, reindeer ears, Santa Claus hats and others. Some headbands even have flashing lights attached. Headbands are often are part of a larger fashion statement – they can be color coded and matched accordingly to one’s outfit.

Another use for headbands is in the Japanese culture where they are symbolic of respect to traditions and other disciplines. Headbands, or sweatbands, are worn around the forehead during physical activity to absorb sweat and keep it from reaching the eyes. Sweatbands are often made of a continuous loop of terrycloth, as it is a particularly absorbent fabric. Folded bandanas, usually knotted behind the head, also serve this purpose. Headbands are usually used for sports but have not been popular since the late 1970s or early 1980s. Until now. Lately all types of headbands are becoming a bit more popular.

Paris Hilton’s Jewelry

Paris-Hilton-Jewelry

If you’ve heard of Paris Hilton, you know about her love of and interest in jewelry. If you haven’t heard of her, perhaps a short bio is on order. Her grandfather was Conrad Hilton – the founder of the famous hotel chain. This gave here a bit of a jump start in some ways and perhaps proved to be a hindrance in other ways. All in all, she’s had an extremely productive life so far in her short 30 years and can claim success in careers that most people in the world struggle a lifetime to reach less than 10% of her success. She’s made a famous Cd as a singer, she’s acted in both TV and Movies, she’s started her own perfume lines and clothing designs. In addition, she is a quite beautiful young woman that has also had a successful career as a model.

Now that we’ve refreshed our memories and become a bit more familiar with Paris Hilton, let’s take a look at an unfortunate occurrence in 2008 with her jewelry. It seems her bedroom was ransacked and up to 2 million dollars worth of jewelry was stolen.

She was living in a gated community in the hills of Sherman Oaks called Mulholland Estates. It seems that the there was a person in a hooded sweatshirt that crept in and made a mess of the bedroom. It was at 5 am that a security guard called the police and reported what he saw. The security guard also reported that the thief was wearing gloves. Many of the details of the robbery were not released, but the detectives doing an investigation said that the robber didn’t appear to be very professional. Luckily, Paris was not at home at the time of the burglary. Or, perhaps this was unlucky. If she were at home, there’s a chance she could have been injured. Or, if she were at home, there’s a chance that she could have prevented the burglary or helped to catch the criminal. It is interesting that an amateur was able to foil the security system, and break into a gated community and a gated home through a few layers of security guards and cameras and gotten away with 2 million dollars worth of jewelry.

Now, the police say they should be able to track the thief down based upon the information they have. Then they get to have a trial to see if he really did it or not. Unfortunately for Paris, this was not the first time she has been the victim of a robbery. In 2004, she was also burgled and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of her possessions. This was when she was living with her sister, Nicky. She spent over 5 million dollars on the house. Many people have seen the house on TV during an interview with Ellen Degeneres. It has been reported that the house has a stripper’s pole for strip dancing. This is perhaps something the burglar considered taking, but was unable to sneak away with.

Adventures in Accessories

Adventures-in-Accessories

There once was a man that craved a woman who knew how to ‘accessorize’. What did that mean? Is this a skill or even an art? Is this and important part of life? Can you survive without it or will you become the laughingstock of your friends and even family? Can you accessorize?

The concept of accessorizing comes from the idea of wearing the right thing for the right occasion that fits you perfectly. No, not the dress, slacks or even blouse. It means the little things matter a lot. Especially when the outfit is understated, the accessories can make it or break it. And, in some circles, this makes or breaks your social, and sometimes, financial, success. Never underestimate the power of the bangle. Loathe the inappropriate necklace. Detest and avoid the insincere broach. In this world, even the seemingly safe cocktail ring is suspect and may be kicked out of the party.

The art of proper and creative and subtle yet invigorating accessorizing is much too large and profound a topic to address here. Here, we try only to save lives from fatal bad taste decisions that can destroy marriages and bring the downfall of nations. At times, bad accessorizing has been reported to have caused earthquakes, but we suspect it only triggered them and the earth did the rest.

So, how can one know when and where and how and with what to accessorize? For the following words to make sense, you must already be part way on the journey. You must have already slain dragons and looked evil in the eye or the words written here will be empty and meaningless. Anyway, here goes: Know where you are.

That’s it. This can be the most important phrase in life and entire thomes have been written trying to make the same simple point. Know where you are. This is like knowing you are on the north pole and all you’ve brought is a pair of Nike tennis shorts and a sun visor. Knowing where you are is like sitting in the middle of a shark feeding frenzy and smelling of fish in distress. It can also be like be one of the pigs on a truck on their way to the meat packer. You would rather be the driver, wouldn’t you? If you know where you are, you can do something about it. Perhaps you can slip out the back, change your scent or bring a jacket. Knowing where you are going is even better. You can plan ahead. You can think about what others will wear. You can think about the statement you want to make. You can be elegant, you can be on the verge of tasteless and you can even be downright insulting. Different approaches for different places. Sometimes the bell of the ball is the most offensive woman of the evening – in her choice of accessories. It all depends on where she is and who calls the shots. Make the right choices and you will be calling them soon.

The Last-Minute Man

The-Last-Minute-Man

It’s the time of the year for shopping. Not for fun, for some of us, but because of the law. The Santa law that state of you don’t buy gifts for those you love, they will think you don’t love them anymore. Thus, people that don’t normally enjoy shopping, are forced to do it and they often put it off until the last minute.

In fact, tey aren’t always men. They are the spouses, the boyfriends, the loved ones, all who, up until this week, have been steering clear of malls and anything that requires gift-wrapping. But in these last few days, they have suddenly assumed a predictable stance, bending over glass counters and snapping up necklaces, bracelets and rings. During what retailers call “desperation week,” spending on jewelry stands out, spiking high at the end of the holiday season.

This year, with jewelry sales up just slightly at the front end of the holiday rush, and the price of gold rising, retailers are depending heavily on what they see as the manly tradition. They consider themselves experts on the procrastinating male, especially when it comes to sparkle and glitter. More than half of the jewelry customers are men during this week, but drop to about 5 percent at any other time of the year.

Actually, 21 percent of men surveyed, according to a recent Consumer Reports poll, had not started their shopping by Dec. 19, compared with 13 percent of women. Researchers and analysts also suggest that marketing plays on gender stereotypes, too, influencing what men tend to buy.

There is also a certain amount of trepidation. “I don’t get her earrings, because she’s fussy about her earrings and I never get it right,” said Mr. Higgins, a salesman. Although like most men, he prefers to buy jewelry to items like clothing, he isn’t exactly sure of her tastes. Some decisions can be tough – like deciding to go with something a little unconventional than classic.

Although many men realize that a gift of jewelry is more for the woman than a gift of lingerie or some cooking appliance, that doesn’t always make it easy. Sometimes the simplest thing can be the best bet, though. Even though men shop at the last minute, it doesn’t mean that they don’t care. Chalk it up to the often unsung but equally valid tendency of men. Birthdays and anniversaries are also often forgotten as important dates to celebrate. Perhaps if women understood and accepted men for this, there would be a lot less petty arguments, or would there? Until then, men will be rushing around these last few minutes of the holiday shopping season, trying to pick out what’s just right and avoid a crisis. Except for us single guys. We’ve got it made at holiday time. More time to enjoy sports without the guilt. No need to visit and shop for aunts and grannies we’ve never met. No tedious holiday dinners with more unrecognized faces than Grand Central Station. Go ahead, other guys, eat your hearts out. Oh yes, and you did get something for her cat, didn’t you?

Animal Jewelry

Animal-Jewelry

Before you start to imagine your poodle with golden hoop earrings or your hamster wearing a diamond necklace, this article is not to be about jewelry for your pet. It is about jewelry in the shape, likeness and in honor of your favorite pets, insects or animals.

Animal jewelry can magically capture the essence of an animal in necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, and rings. Whether in sterling silver, 14k gold or a variety of carved gemstones you can find the animal of your dreams. Lots of Dogs such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Collies, Dachshunds, Scottish Terriers, Scotties, and Terriers, as well as Dog Bones and Dog Power jewelry.

You will find Wolf jewelry of running and howling wolves, Dolphins swimming through the water and jumping out into the air, Birds and Eagles soaring and coming in for a landing (or maybe just grabbing a bite to eat), Black Widow Spiders spinning their webs, fantasy horses as Pegasus gracefully flying, Unicorns frolicking. Some animals such as Armadillos, Big Horn Ram Heads, Frogs, Snakes appear only to wrap around your finger as rings. Colorful Gemstones and Mother of Pearl carved pendants, pins, earring and bracelets of Dolphins, Fish, Turtles, Elephants and more.

So for pet and animal lovers, they will be able to find almost any animal recreated in silver, gold, brass, and sometimes in crystal glass. Specialized jewelry outlets are constantly searching for unique treasures that any pet or animal lover will appreciate to add to their selections. From dogs and cats to lions and zebras, you will find a gift or jewelry item that expresses your love and interest in any pet or animal in your life.

Some can be found as tiny charms in the shape of puppies for charm bracelets and others are large insects like bumble bees or dragon flies you can find as a brooch. What about butterfly earrings or a pendant that looks like a frog? You can find images of your favorite animal carved into leather for a cuff of bracelet as well. The possibilities are endless. What you may find most often, though, are the smaller and cuter insects. Tiny butterflies or ladybugs. Humming birds also make beautiful subjects for interesting and eye-catching  jewelry. If you’re a serious dog lover, you may be able to find your favorite breed immortalized on a pendant. Oftentimes, some of the most curious items are to be found on brooches. A brooch allows for the more interesting items that don’t always go easily as earrings or a pendant.

However, the largest selection will most likely be found on a charm bracelet. The charm bracelet lends itself to the most diverse array of options available in the world of jewelry. All recreated in tiny form, the charms you can find might be made of many materials and can be quite affordable to quite precious in price. You’ll be delighted by insects, pets, wild animals and even ancient creepy crawlies preserved in amber. If animals are your passion, you’ll find a piece of jewelry that honors your fave.
