What Color is a Real Diamond?

What-Color-is-a-Real-DiamondFew people know that diamonds occur naturally in a variety of colors. Some are steel gray, while others are white, blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink to purple, brown, and even black!  Colored diamonds have impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration. Pure diamonds are perfectly transparent and colorless. Diamonds are split into two main types and some subtypes, according to the nature of impurities present and how these impurities affect light absorption.

A ‘Type I’ diamond has nitrogen atoms as the main impurity. If the nitrogen atoms are in pairs they do not affect the diamond’s color; these are Type IaA. If the nitrogen atoms are in large even-numbered groups, they create a yellow to brown tint. About 98% of gem diamonds are type Ia, and most of these are a mixture of IaA and IaB material. If the nitrogen atoms are dispersed throughout the crystal in isolated sites (not paired or grouped), they give off an intense yellow or occasionally brown tint (Type Ib); the rare canary diamonds belong to this type, which represents only 0.1% of known natural diamonds. Have you seen a Canary Diamond? They can be quite stunning.

‘Type II’ diamonds don’t have nitrogen impurities. They absorb light in a different part of the spectrum from Type I diamonds. They also have differing fluorescence characteristics. A Type IIa diamond can be pink, red, or brown due to structural anomalies. They are very rare. Type IIb diamonds, which account for 0.1% of gem diamonds, are usually light blue due to scattered boron inside. A blue-grey color may also occur in Type Ia diamonds. There are also green diamonds, whose color is derived from exposure to varying quantities of radiation.

All are technically diamonds and all colors can be truly beautiful. Which are the best? The best diamond is the diamond that you love: The one that means something special to you.

Earrings for Men?

Earrings-for-MenWhat does it mean when a man wears an earring? Is it a good thing? Would you recommend it? A recent poll elicited differing opinions from diverse sources. One woman said that it is quite common in her profession for men to wear a single stud earring in one ear. She found it quite fashionable. Her profession? She’s works on a boat with professional fishermen. She said it shows a kind of individual spirit.

One woman mentioned that she likes hoop earrings on men when they wear them in both ears. She doesn’t like that simple ’stud in one ear’ look. She said it reminds her of the 80’s. Who would want to go back to the 80’s? Some of us. Moving on…

Now another woman explained that some guys can wear earrings and some cannot. It depends on the style or look of the man. Like some men look great in a trench coat and others look like perverts, earrings can be the same. She also mentioned that depending upon the culture, an earring in one ear for a man can be a signal to others that he is gay.

Finally, one woman shared that her tough and bull-dog-looking boyfriend wears earrings and it gives him a ‘biker look’. My guess is that he could wear high heels if he wants and nobody is going to bother him about it.

In summary, earrings on men can be a bold and individualistic statement. But they are perhaps one of the most daring things a man can do with his look. Get opinions from those you respect, then do what you want. You only live once and you’ll find out quick enough if wearing earrings is going to be a life-threatening decision.

Costume Jewelry – the Excitement Never Ends!

You don’t need to be dressed up on Halloween to wear costume jewelry. At the time the term was created, the word ‘costume’ simply meant ‘outfit’. Costume jewelry sometimes gets a bad rap, but as those of us in the fashion world know: there’s a time and a place for almost every outfit and accessory. And those that don’t experiment don’t have much fun in their lives. So, let’s talk about one of the most festive things to wear when we get all dressed up.

Costume-Jewelry-the-Excitement-Never-EndsCostume jewelry can also be called: fashion jewelry or even ‘fake’ jewelry. It was designed to be inexpensive jewelry that anyone could wear. Costume jewelry originated in the 1930s as a cheap, disposable accessory meant to be worn with a specific outfit. In contrast with expensive pieces with solid gold and precious stones, costume jewelry is made of less valuable materials including base metals, glass, plastic, and synthetic stones.

Originally, costume or fashion jewelry was made of inexpensive simulated gemstones, such as rhinestones or lucite, set in pewter, silver, nickel or brass. Modern costume jewelry incorporates a wide range of materials. High end crystals, cubic zirconia simulated diamonds, and some semi-precious stones are used in place of precious stones. Metals include gold- or silver-plated brass, and sometimes vermeil or sterling silver. Lower-priced jewelry may still use gold plating over pewter, nickel or other metals; items made in countries outside the United States may contain lead. Some pieces incorporate plastic, acrylic, leather or wood.

So, shop around for some costume jewelry if you haven’t yet. It adds flash and style to so many outfits and most of all, a healthy bit of fun!

Are you Lord of your Rings?

Are-you-Lord-of-your-RingsAnother notable ring you will probably never end up wearing is the The Ring of the Fisherman, also known as the Piscatory Ring. It is an important part of the Pope’s outfit. He is described by the Catholic Church as the successor of Saint Peter. Peter was a fisherman. It has a picture of Peter fishing from a boat. This is symbolic and in reference to the apostles who were ‘fishers of men’. This special Ring was even used until 1842 to seal official documents. I think now they just use email.

What about rings for you and I? Finger Rings. So many types, shapes and sizes? Do you like rings? We love them! There are too many kinds to mention here, but we’ll touch on the top 3 – besides the wedding rings – that’s a topic for another day. Here are the top 3 with stones:

There are Solitaire rings – rings with a single stone.

Eternity Rings – Rings with stones that go all the way around the outside.

Cluster Rings – Rings with a bunch of stones in a group.

Each have their place.

Solitaire rings are somewhat elegant and belong at special and formal occasions. They can have a single diamond, birthstone or even opal or jade are nice. Eternity rings often have a theme. Some are for marriage and usually have diamonds all the way around. You can also have birthstones of your children as well. These can be worn at any time for any occasion. Cluster rings are often for parties. They can be classy or gaudy. Subtle or overstated. Bright and flashy or elegant and opulent.

Be sure to wear the right rings on your fingers before you go out. They can really add the final touch to an outfit.

The Right Necklace for You!

The-Right-NecklaceThere are three things to think about when choosing a necklace. Face shape, length and outfit. Let’s look at them now.

Your Face.

Brush your hair back and look at your face straight on in a mirror in a well lit room. You’ll fit one of these basic types:

Oval, Round, Heart-shaped, or Rectangular.

Choose necklace shapes that accentuate the shape of your face. They don’t always need to copy the shape of your face, but they should compliment it. Now that you are thinking about the shape of your face, play with different designs and see what works best with you. You’ll find the right style brings out your natural beauty.

The Length of your Necklace.

Proper length can make a big difference. Be sure you get this right, or you’ll feel choked or you’ll keep losing the necklace you just bought in the top of your dress.

The common sizes are as follows. They will fit you differently depending upon the size of your neck and upper shoulders.

The ‘Collar’ is between 12 and 13 inches, this is the tightest. The ‘Choker’ is about 14 to 16 inches. These normally rest just above the collar bone. The ‘Princess’ is 17″-19″ and hangs is just a bit looser than the Choker. It is often seen with a pendant. The ‘Matinee’ is 20 to 24 inches. These are the most common lengths and hang low just above the neckline of your dress. The ‘Opera’ is 28″-34″ works with plunging necklines and can be doubled if too long for the occasion. Ropes are over 45 inches and give more freedom to be creative.

When you choose your necklace, pick an outfit with some of the same colors and style. Mixing is not recommended here and it often done to disastrous results! More on the colors and styles to come.

In the future, we’ll look at the stones and many other objects that may grace your necklace. From rustic style to elegant, they are often commented on by others when you get it just right.

Jewelry for your Wedding Day – what to wear!

wedding-jewelry

There are so many more choices today even than when your mother got married. Take your time and make choices that fit you. After all, you’re only going to do this once!

You have choices of: rhinestones, diamonds, Cubic Zirconia (CZ), Swarovski crystals, Austrian crystals, and more.

Start with your favorite piece, whether it’s a necklace, tiara, bracelet, earrings or something else. Something you just fall in love with defines your taste. If it’s right for your gown, then build around it with the rest of your choices. There are so many options out there – you won’t need to compromise.

If you’re one of the bridesmaids, you’ll do well to compliment and follow the bride. Of course be sure to be understated when compared with her choices – it’s her day, not yours – yet.

Not sure what works with your gown?

Compliment a white gown with white pearls and silver. Off white looks good with ivory pearls or light gold or silver. A champagne gown looks best with dark ivory/champagne and gold accents. Clear stones can work with all colors, but make sure they don’t get lost in the background. Jewelry that can’t be seen often needn’t be worn at all.

Some more Tips

There are no hard and fast rules here. Each person is so unique – that’s what makes dressing up for this occasion so much fun!

Simple dresses with deep necklines allow larger necklaces.

Pearls are traditionally safe, but be picky and don’t use them as an easy solution. Do they actually fit well?

Gowns with high necklines allow no necklace or a colorful choice. If no necklace is chosen, the earrings become instantly more important.

What pattern is used in your dress? Is it fine detail? Is there no detail? You will do well to compliment – usually by copying – the overall patterns found on your dress. Elaborate or ornate dresses usually call for complex patterns in your jewelry. As: ‘the simple calls for simple’.

Remember to make sure your hairstyle and veil work well with the jewelry, and vice-versa.

Be sure your earrings are a compliment to your necklace and not trying to make a different statement.

Bracelets are more often than not unneeded. If you choose to wear one, be sure it does not draw attention from the dress.

Gloves make a different statement than a bracelet.

If you are a bridesmaid and the Bride has selected your jewelry set, all the better.

If you are the Bride selecting what will be worn, consider the following.

Remember to start with your dress and style, then think about how your bridesmaids can be best accentuated.

Consider what colors they are wearing or what standards you have set. You may even want to try out with each of them what will work best both in the context of your wedding and what works best for them and their appearance.

You’ll do better by considering each of their complexions and body types and helping them to look their best as opposed to making them all look the same.

With your Wedding Jewelry carefully chosen and your Bridesmaids each looking stunning, you’ll have a happy and beautiful wedding party. Now, what about the groom?
